JOURNAL ASSIGNMENT #8
STUDIO LIGHTING
This picture is unique because the lighting shows the shadow of the girl which creates repeating shapes and an interesting composition.

This picture is interesting because the lighting is good and so is the contrast. The girls expression makes the photograph stand out.

This picture is unique because the composition is well set up. The lighting is flattering and there are no distracting background elements.

I like this picture because it uses the rule of thirds well. By using special lighting to make the background all white the photographer gets rid of anything that could be distracting and take away from the girl in the background.

This portrait is different because it isn't the traditional studio lighting look. By adding the stool and putting the model in a different position the photographer made the picture more interesting and unique.

JOURNAL ASSIGNMENT #7
REALISTIC PORTRAITS

My ambiguous portraits need more contrast because they look dull and gray. They don't look posed because the people I took pictures of weren't looking at the camera. I like the composition.

JOURNAL ASSIGNMENT #6
DAVID HOCKNEY
When shooting a David Hockney style photograph it is important to remain the same distance away from the subject in every shot. Also, all the shots need to be shot at the same time so that the lighting doesn't change. It is important to try to keep the same proportions for each shot so that when the entire scene is put together the photos match up evenly with each other. However, they don't need to match up perfectly because the difference in pictures is what makes David Hockney style interesting.
JOURNAL ASSIGNMENT #5
CARTERS MOUNTAIN

My carters mountain pictures had good subjects and composition. However, they had low contrast and look dull and they were dusty. I would rate my picture of the gate a 7 because I like the layering but it needs more contrast and a better center of interest. I would rate my picture of austin a 6 because although I like the composition it looks really dull and his face is too dark.

JOURNAL ASSIGNMENT #4
POLAROID LIFT OFFS
Good polaroid lift offs usually have good color and contrast. They also need to be kind of dark so they show up well on the glass. Good lighting to use would be sunlight because that will create good contrast. I am going to shoot my polaroid lift offs outside when it isn't cloudy. I want to use flowers or other plants as my subjects.

I really liked one of my polaroid lift offs because the color came out nice and green on the vines was vibrant. The sunlight coming through the leaves made the picture pretty and added contrast. My other polaroid lift off wasn't very good because the colors were dull and it was too light.

JOURNAL ASSIGNMENT #3
SEPIA TONING
Strong sepia toned photographs need to have good contrast and be on the darker side. There also needs to be a clear center of interest. I intend to use buildings or people for my sepia toning assignment.

I liked the subjects in my sepia toned pictures and the composition of them was really good. I should have made them darker with more contrast. I also should have shot in higher lighting so that I could have had a larger depth of field.

JOURNAL ASSIGNMENT #1
This portrait was taken by Joe Buissink. It is appealing because the center of interest is clear, being the girl's eyes. The picture has good contrast and clarity.

Joe Buissink also shot this wedding portait. The picture is appealing to me because the higher speed film and grain works to make this picture better. Also, the lighting is good and there are no distracting elements.

This picture was also shot by Joe Buissink. I like it because he took the shot at exactly the right time to capture the moment. The center of interest is clear and the background people add to portrait.

This picture was taken by Cecil Beaton. It is appealing because the girl is exactly centered and her reflection shows repeating shapes. I also like how everything around her is white because it provides good contrast and leads the eye to her with no distractions.

Cecil Beaton also took this picture. I like it because the black and white stripes are good contrast and clear. I also like that her clothes and hat frame her face making it clear that she is the center of interest.
